| Causes,
Incidence and Risk Factors The cause of astigmatism is unknown. It is usually present from birth, may occur along with nearsightedness or farsightedness, and tends to remain fairly constant. ||
| Treatment Glasses or contact lenses specially designed to counteract the unevenness of the cornea treat this vision defect. |
||
| Expectations
(Prognosis) The astigmatism can usually be corrected for with glasses or contact lenses, allowing adequate vision. |
||
| Complications If used, those complications associated with contact lenses (including the risk of corneal abrasion) may develop. |
